IPL-7 Auction‬ Update

Yuvi, Karthik go for record price, Brett Lee unsold; Sehwag sold for Rs 3.2 crore

Indian cricketers reigned supreme in early phases of auction for the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday, with Yuvraj Singh going to the Royal Challengers Bangalore for a staggering Rs. 14 crore. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik attracted a winning bid of Rs. 12.5 crore from Delhi Daredevils.

Yuvraj, who was earlier with the Pune Warriors (now disbanded), and Karthik fetched the highest price among the 16 marquee players, who were up for grabs in the first session of auction.

Besides Karthik, Daredevils, who didn't retain any player, bought back maverick former England captain Kevin Pietersen for Rs. 9 crore and India's Test opener Murali Vijay for a handsome Rs. 5 crore. Vijay, who was earlier with Chennai Super Kings, was the first cricketer to go under the hammer.

Flamboyant batsman Robin Uthappa, out of the national team for some time now, was sold to Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs. 5 crore. Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell, last year's surprise million-dollar buy, was bought by Kings XI Punjab for Rs. 6 crore.

Australia’s Ashes hero, left-arm pacer Mitchell Johnson was sold to Kings XI Punjab for Rs. 6.5 crore.  His compatriot David Warner went to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs. 5.5 crore.

Another Australian, Nathan Coulter-Nile, was sold to Delhi Daredevils for Rs. 4.25 crore. Fastest centurion and New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs. 4.5 crore. Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron was sold to the RCB for Rs. 2 crore.

Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene and former New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor surprisingly found no buyers. Others who remained unsold included Brett Lee and a host of West Indian players.

Retired Australian great Michael Hussey, nicknamed Mr Cricket, attracted a winning bid of Rs. 5 crore from the Mumbai Indians.

India discard Virender Sehwag was sold to Kings XI Punjab for Rs.3.2 crore, while Kolkata Knight Riders used their right to match card to buy back South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis, for whom Chennai Super Kings bid Rs. 5.5 crore.

The auction list of 514 players features 219 capped players (169 Indians and 50 overseas players) and 292 uncapped players (255 Indians and 37 overseas players).

With IPL completing six seasons, the eight teams were allowed to retain a maximum of five players, something that only Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals opted for while Delhi Daredevils preferred to release its entire squad.
